Open Letter To President Mahama: Make SHS Four Years

His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama

The decision by the Mills-Mahama administration to reverse the already running 4-year Senior High School into three years in 2009 was purely political and there must be further consideration so as to ensure that the welfare of Ghanaian Students does not suffer in the quest by some to gain political power.

The abysmal performance of students in the 2011/2012 Basic Education Certificate Examination saw the government into compromising the standard which pegs the least grade to qualify into a public Senior High School from aggregate 30 to aggregate 42.This situation is not the best, as far as the quality of our education is concerned.

Now, the Computerized Selection and Placement has also delayed the admission of students into Senior High School where even though results are released earlier, students have to wait for first placement, sometimes second placement and so on.

The main issue is that the 2012/2013 WASSCE is going to witness a scenario where due to politics, students who have spent 4-years in a particular institution and handled by the same masters going to compete with students who have spent 3 years under the same institution with same conditions.

Doing so will mean just experimenting with the lives of our students whom we continuously refer as future leaders.

I will humbly beg the president of the republic to do something about this unfortunate scenario. I am begging the president to reconsider the decision of reversing the duration back to four years and let the current batch write their WASSCE in somewhere November, 2013 which will give them some ample time for the masters to complete their syllabus.
