Takoradi, Jan. 29, GNA - Dr Teddy Avotri, Metropolitan Health Director of Sekondi/Takoradi on Tuesday expressed regret about the upsurge of institutional deaths in the health facilities and demanded that prompt action is taken to rectify the situation.

He said if people who have confidence in health facilities and therefore reports to them are dying, then what happens to those who do not access to quality health care at all.

Dr Avotri who was addressing the 2012 Performance Review of the Metro Health Directorate therefore encouraged medical practitioners and care givers  to give off their best to improve the situation.

He said: 'We must make every necessary effort to ensure that no deaths are recorded or occurred,' and called for early referrals of patients to better equipped hospitals.

Dr Avotri said bleeding cases at the Out Patients Department should be quickly taken to the theatre whilst proper mechanisms are put in place to handle all emergency cases.

He expressed dissatisfaction about 'still Birth' attributing it to inactions of birth attendants.

He therefore called for strict adherence to protocols governing delivery to ensure that both babies and mothers are saved.

Dr Avotri cautioned against the practice where midwives solicit monies from expectant mothers before they are taken proper care.

He said financial and lack of vehicles is the main constraints facing the Directorate.
