Accra, Nov. 4, GNA- The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has called on developed countries to assist developing nations to nurture their democratic goals.

He said since good governance and democracy went hand-in-hand, it was the responsibility of developed democracies to ensure the improvement of these societies to accelerate their developmental efforts.

A statement issued by the Ghana High Commission in London said Otumfuo Osei Tutu made these remarks during a discussion with Don McKinnon, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth in London.

The statement said Otumfuo Osei Tutu called on the Commonwealth Secretariat to put in place pro-active measures of assisting developing countries to achieve their development goals.

The Asantehene said there was the need for developing countries to place emphasis on the training of middle-level personnel who would provide skills needed in the various sectors of the economy. He also called on donor countries not to tie their aid to specific conditions but to allow developing countries to decide and use these resources for their developmental needs within the context of their own country's priorities.

The statement said DON McKinnon shared the sentiments expressed by the Asantehene and appeal to Ghana to continue to play its part as an important member of the Commonwealth.
