A group calling itself the Coalition of Women against Drug Addiction (COWAD), is pushing for the mandatory disclosure of medical status of Presidential Candidates, including toxicology.

According to COWAD, “this will help secure the future of our children and grandchildren, because then they may not be looking up to our leaders and be picking bad habits from them”.

While commending the Presidential Candidate for the Progressive People's Party, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, who voluntarily submitted himself to thorough medical examination and subsequently making the results public, COWAD noted that “the usage or non-usage of drugs by political leaders have greater influence on the youth and their indulgence in the act or otherwise”.

“We will encourage all other presidential candidates to follow the significant example by Dr. Nduom to undergo a medical examination and publish the results,"according to a statement issued in the name of the group by its Chairperson Madam Felicity Akua Asare.

"However, we will wish that toxicology is included on the list of the examination which must be mandatory,” the statement suggested.

The group urged "politicians not to sweep under the carpet, public request for toxicology test by all Presidential and Parliamentary candidates”.

Meanwhile, COWAD has expressed “dissatisfaction at attempts by some political leaders, most especially the NPP leader, Nana Akufo-Addo to swerve any question on the fight against the drug trade and usage in Ghana”.

It said the seemingly open display of non-commitment to the fight against drugs by the NPP and its flag bearer, was a source worry since "a critical analysis of the NPP manifesto revealed no concrete solution to the menace".
