26.11.2012 LISTEN

A crowd that can only rival that which sang to bring the walls of Jericho tumbling down last Saturday welcomed the standard bearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo Add, at the Jubilee Park in Takoradi, into the Western Region when the campaign trail hit the region.

Those who could climb tress, like the Biblical Zacheous did, others were seen stretching their necks from very long distances, just to have a glimpse of the man many have tipped to be the next President for the Republic after the December 7 polls.

When he took his turn to address the teeming gathering, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo told Ghanaians to vote out the NDC, since they were incapable of exploiting the large resources at their disposal to move Ghana forward.

He said the NDC's opposition to the his Second  Cycle education idea told much about how the party and its leadership were bankrupt of ideas to get Ghana working, and should be voted out before they cause more harm to the nation and its people.

He told the people that under his government, the first three stages of education, comprising the basic education scheme; namely Kindergarten, Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS) would receive a facelift.

The New Patriotic Party Presidential Candidate said the free SHS policy is going to commence in 2013.

He said if the NDC has told Ghanaians that they could not implement the free Senior High School education and that Ghanaians should wait for 20 years, 'We cannot wait for 20 years. The only answer we can give the NDC is to vote them out'.

On his plans for the transformation of the economy, the President-in-waiting averred he was going to ensure that the proceeds from the oil and gas exploration changed the lives of the people of the Western Region and Ghana as a whole.

He promised that his government, unlike the current administration, was going to show its appreciation to the Western Region for the years of faithfulness and their contribution to the development of the country.

Nana Addo indicated he was going to ensure that the Western Region became the “oil and gas hub of Ghana and West Africa”, adding that he would empower the youth for the nation's development.

He added that he would work to encourage the young people in the region to get involved in the development of oil and gas.

“We have the team of men and women capable of transforming the fortunes of this country and powering us into the new stage of progress and prosperity”, he noted

For his part, former President Kufuor, who transformed the country in the shortest possible time, lamented how he negotiated with the German government to modernize the railway sector 'but now what are we seeing' – mess

Addressing a mammoth rally, Mr. Kufuor urged the youth of the country to vote the NPP into power to help uplift the image of the country.

'In the world today we are already in the global village .In the global village there is something called competition. It is only competition that can allow us to stay in. The competition is about education' he said.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor energized the crowd, when he talked about the immense contributions the Western Region have made and continues to make towards national development.

He said the bulk of cocoa production; timber and minerals are exploited in the Western Region. 'Oil and gas, the latest addition to state resources, are explored in the Western Region. That is why the region needs to be resourced in appreciation of this role.

Mr. Kufuor said the promise being bandied about by the NDC to resource the region has proved to be mere rhetoric, and appealed to voters to return the NPP and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to Government House to exploit the natural resources of the region for the development of the region and the whole country.

'When we discovered oil, they made fun of the discovery. Now, they are making use of oil resources as if there was no tomorrow.
