Adansi East records 272 disaster victims

Adansi-Atwereboana (Ash), Oct. 22, GNA - Two hundred and seventy-two people in the Adansi East District of Ashanti suffered various disasters from January to June this year, Mr Francis Dorpenyoh, the District NADMO Co-ordinator, announced on Wednesday. He said estimated cost of destruction to property was more than 100 million cedis.

Speaking at the District's celebration of this year's World Disaster Day at Adansi-Atwereboana, Mr. Dorpenyoh said 15 communities were hit by rainstorms, while domestic fires were recorded in three communities and bush fire recorded in one community.

He said in response to the disasters, the Adansi East district assembly had purchased 20 packets of roofing sheets, 100 cutlasses, 20 Wellington boots and 12 bicycles for distribution to the victims. Mr Dorpenyoh called on people in the district to join the crusade to prevent rivers and streams in the district from drying up completely during the dry season.

Mr. Dominic Yeboah, District Chief Executive, expressed concern about the increasing rate of HIV/AIDS in the district in spite of efforts to reduce it.

He announced that the district had received 125 million cedis to be disbursed to Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) engaged in the HIV/AIDS campaign.

Mr. Yeboah said the spread of the disease posed a real disaster and therefore, called on communities in the district to join hands in the anti-HIV/AIDS campaign. 22 Oct. 03
