IMANI Delighted with Swift Responses from the National Pensions Regulatory Authority
05.11.2012 LISTEN

The Chairman
NPRA
Accra

November 5, 2012

Dear Mr. Asante,
We have noted with delight reports on the efforts the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) has made over the last couple of weeks to address some of the main outstanding issues concerning the mandatory tier-2 segment of the pensions industry, its administration and regulation.

We believe that under your strategic leadership of the Authority, and through the hard work of its management, the pensions industry CAN become a major force for Ghana's transformation, efficiently allocating investment capital, deepening the financial system, mitigating social risk, and helping provide a welfare safety net for millions of ordinary Ghanaians.

We recognise that in the heat of our advocacy, we may have come across as blind to the constraints being faced by the NPRA and the challenges to your leadership posed by institutional defects in the public service structure as a whole. We were indeed cognizant of these matters, but it is also our patriotic duty to spur you and your team to transcend these hurdles for the good of our country. As has always been with our rather combative advocacy within and across much of Africa, with demonstrable results, we tend to forget that ours in Ghana may be lagging behind the strides others have made. We therefore regret that occasionally the patriotic quest to improve upon public service administration in this country results in disagreeable exchanges between civil society activists, such as ourselves, and public office-holders, such as your good self. We hope nevertheless that we shall be able to preserve a respectful relationship between our two organisations when engaging on matters of national interest.

We shall continue to follow pensions regulatory developments in this country, and we would like to assure you of our immense respect for the importance of the mandate you have been entrusted by government, on behalf of the good people of Ghana. We wish you Godspeed, Sir.

Earnestly,

Franklin Cudjoe
