PRESENT DANGER – FGJ CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION BY SECURITY AGENCIES ON MERCENARY TAPE ATTRIBUTED TO ANTHONY KARBO

23.10.2012 LISTEN
By Forum for Governance and Justice

The Forum for Governance and Justice (FGJ) condemns in no uncertain terms the diabolical plans outlined in a tape attributed to Anthony Karbo, National Youth Organiser of the NPP and its parliamentary candidate for the Lawra Constituency. Clearly, anyone who has heard the said tape, as Nana Akomea the Director of Communication of the NPP admits, will agree that the voice sounds very much like that of Mr. Karbo.

While we welcome the proposed internal investigation by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), we believe that the content of the tape, including: importing mercenaries from the West African sub-region intended to instigate violence, attacking security agencies including the Police and the Military, attacking some officers of the Electoral Commission, and framing Eve Military Brigadiers as well as some officers of the Electoral Commission falsely, for attending secret meetings, are serious matters with national and international ramifications which require the attention of recognized State and regional security institutions.

Indeed, the idea of an aspiring MP outlining how he is meeting with all the bad boys; some of them NDC boys, some from Libya, some ayigbe (Eve) boys who have come into Ghana from Togo, and that there are some guys who have come in from Benin and Liberia, is very disturbing.

It is the position of the FGJ that this is a present danger because as noted on the tape, he expected to consolidate these thugs by the second week of October across the whole country. Another aspect of this extremely worrying tape that justifies our call for an investigation is the plan to start attacking particular national institutions such as the police, the military, the national security and the BNI by the end of October.

While we await the outcome of an investigation, we must state that other pronouncement of Anthony Karbo, including his declaration that if his party, the NPP, does not win the 2012 elections, Ghana will become Afghanistan makes it plausible that he could have made the statements on the tape, including the plan to frame particular officers at the Electoral Commission such as the Director of Operations, the CID Boss, one Mr. Amidu and some of the Brigadiers - Ayigbe (Eve brigadiers) for purportedly holding secret meetings, even if it is not true.

The FGJ in particular cannot accept a mere denial by Mr. Karbo as reported by Mr. Akomea because the FGJ petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on the 27th of March 2012 in relation to the unfortunate occurrences involving the raiding of Asempa FM on February 24th 2012 led by Anthony Karbo and subsequently filed a complaint with the Police CID.

Even as we call on the State security agencies to act swiftly on the very worrisome content of this tape, outlining plans to endanger the peace, security and stability of our nation, we wish to call on groups; religious bodies, workers, civil society, youth political parties, flag-bearers, and all Ghanaians to condemn these sorts of intentions. All must join us in our call for in-depth investigations regardless of who and what the motivations may be for such dangerous ideas and proposed actions.

The security agencies have justification to investigate this issue, and just as we have previously called for and supported calls for the investigation of disturbing secret tapes attributed to Mr. Yaw Djan, and Maxwell Kofi Jumah, so too do we call for an investigation of Mr. Karbo, the man most now believe was captured speaking on the tape. We call on Ghanaians to condemn such intentions and to expose them in the interest of protecting our democracy, our peace and our stability.
