The results of the placement of qualified candidates of the 2012 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) into Senior High Schools (SHSs), and Vocational and Technical Institutions (TVIs) have been released and all first year students are to report to school on October 15. Candidates are, therefore, required to access their placement on their mobile phones by texting their index numbers and year of writing their examinations to short code 1060 on all networks except TIGO.

Each successful candidate will then have to print out his or her placement form from the internet, using a GES scratch card to be purchased at four Ghana Cedis (GH¢4.00) each.

The print-out form will then be presented to the school into which the candidate has been placed for admission.

The scratch cards can be obtained from the Agricultural Development Bank and its agencies, ARB Apex Bank and its network of Rural Banks, SIC-Financial Services Ltd. Head Office, Fidelity Bank and Ghana Post and all its branches.

Candidates who are unable to use the scratch card for various reasons, especially those who have no internet access are required to contact the nearest Regional or District offices for the hard copies of the placement results.

According to Madam Benedicta Naana Biney, Director-General of the GES, who made these known at a news conference in Accra, last thursday, a total of 375,285, representing 99.6 per cent of a registered number of 376,859 candidates qualified for placement, but 245,143, representing 65 per cent had been placed into the over 530 public and 200 private SHSs and TVIs throughout the country, leaving a total of 130,115 representing 34.6 per cent yet to be placed.

Madam Biney said placement had been grouped into two, consisting of a 30 per cent Catchment Area Allocation and a 70 per cent placement which involved the choice of schools across districts and regions of Ghana.

She said there were three categories of candidates placed namely, 2012 BECE candidates who registered within the year of placement; Re-entry candidates consisting of BECE candidates who were unable to gain admission into or deferred their admissions within the immediate past three years; and foreign candidates.

Foreign candidates, she explained, referred to either non-Ghanaian candidates seeking admission, or Ghanaian citizens domiciled in foreign countries and returning to Ghana to continue their education, or children of Ghanaian citizens on foreign missions.

Madam Biney called on all Regional Directors of Education, Regional Placement Co-ordinators, District, Municipal and Metropolitan Directors of Education and Heads of second cycle schools to facilitate the placement process.

She implored parents and candidates to accept the placements made since they were based on the candidates' choice of schools, programmes and on merit.

She advised parents not to leave the registration of BECE candidates for the teachers or pupils but show an interest and make inputs with the advice and guidance of teachers.
