Haruna is NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Bawku Central

Bawku (U/E), Sept 23, GNA – Alhaji Alhassa Haruna, a Deputy Managing Director for Metro TV was on Saturday elected as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Bawku Central constituency.

The Bawku Central seat became vacant following a two-year jail sentence of the incumbent MP, Mr Adamu Dramani by a Fast Track High court in July after he had been charged for piggery and deceit of public officer.

Alhaji Haruna polled 287 of the votes to beat three other opponents including a woman, Madam Gabriana Bugre Gbewa, who got 133 votes. Mr Mohammed Tahiru Naambe, a former Regional Secretary of the party polled 68 votes, while Mr Issaka Baba Seidu got 21 votes.

In a victory message Alhaji Haruna, commended the 521 delegates for the trust reposed in him and promised to give off his best when elected the MP come December 7.

He noted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) looked for all avenues to imprison Mr Adamu Dramani and said in spite of the plans to bring shame to the party and the people of Bawku, the detractors of Mr Adamu and the NDC would be put to shame come December 7.

He told the delegates that unity was key in this year's election, and called on the other contestants to see the outcome of the results as a clear sign of victory for the party in the forthcoming general elections.

Alhaji Haruna indicated that Bawku had been noted for violence during elections and said this year's election should be one that would prove all critics of Bawku wrong because he envisaged the exercise to be the most peaceful.

He, therefore, called on the youth in the area to pursue peace in their conduct as well as rally behind him to maintain the seat.

The Regional Secretary of the NPP, Mr Yaw Mort, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency later said, Alhaji Haruna was highly tipped to win the election because the people of Bawku were peeved by the action of the NDC government in the sentence of their MP.

He indicated that the Bawku seat would forever go to the NPP because the people of Bawku had more trust in the NPP to deliver their needs.

Alhaji Haruna is a Chartered Accountant and a former member of the National Media Commission. He also presided as the President of the Association of Independent Broadcasters.

About 521 delegates cast their votes. Out of the number 512 were valid while nine were declared spoilt in an election supervised by the Electoral Commission in the region.
