Kintampo college of health begins GH¢3.2 Million hostel project

Kintampo (B/A), Sept. 15, GNA – The College of Health and Well-Being-Kintampo (CoHK) has begun the construction of a GHC3.2 Million hostel facility to ease accommodation problems on campus.

The four-storey building complex being financed by the college is designed to accommodate 400 students besides, the entire top floor to be fully air-conditioned, would serve exclusively as guest rooms.

Mr. Alban Sumani Bagbin, Minister of Health, performed the ground breaking ceremony on Thursday as part of an inspection tour of infrastructural developments at the College campus, at Kintampo in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

Mr. Bagbin, who is also a Member of Parliament for Nawdoli, had earlier addressed the 43rd anniversary celebration and fifth congregation durbar of the establishment of the College which was on the theme: 43 years of training mid-level health professionals; the successes, challenges and prospects”.

Dr. Emmanuel Tei Adjase, Director of the College, who conducted the Minister round, said the College was in dire need of residential accommodation because with a continuing student population of about 1,800, 60 per cent of them were non-residents.

He said the College was sourcing funds from three local banks; Home Finance Company, National Investment Bank and Ghana Commercial bank, to finance the project which is expected to be completed within eight months.

Meanwhile, the College is also waiting to complete another 400 student capacity three-storey building under Government of Ghana (GoG) funding which is about 35-40 per cent complete but was abandoned for lack of funds in 2007, the Director told the Minister.

Dr. Adjaase said as at the time, the College needed GHC900,000 to complete it, explaining the cost would be higher now because by 2009 it had risen to about GHC1.5 Million due to rise in prices of materials.

Mr. Bagbin, accompanied By Mr. Eric Opoku, Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, was highly impressed with the College's initiatives, level of infrastructural development, its academic successes and achievements.

He therefore commended the Director and Management and reiterated an earlier statement that “government would definitely support the college with infrastructure to elevate its status to a University College”.

Thousand-eight-hundred graduants were awarded with certificates, diplomats and degrees for 2010, 2011 and 2012 academic years for having fulfilled the academic requirements of the institution.

The degree recipients comprised a batch of five graduants in Medical Assistant Psychiatry, a one year top-up for Medical Assistant graduates. That signified the first ever award of degree by the College.
