Parents urged to team up with government to ensure sound education
Tamale, Sept. 4, GNA - Mr Sam Nasamu Asibigi, Deputy Northern Regional Minister, has appealed to parents to co-operate with government to ensure that that all children of school going age, especially the girl child, are enrolled by 2015.
He made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Tuesday in Tamale.
It was at the sidelines of a tour to some schools in the metropolis where the Minister interacted with the pupils and teachers to mark 'My First Day at School,' to welcome fresh pupils enrolled in nursery and class one.
Mr Asabigi, who was accompanied by Mr Mohammed Saani Rahim, Metropolitan Director of Education, Alhaji Abudulai Yahaya and some officials from the District Education Office, distributed biscuits, soft drinks educational materials to the pupils.
Some of the schools are Tiyumba School, Dahin Sheli School, St. Paul's Primary School and Tamale International School.
The Regional Minister said the provision of educational infrastructure, teaching and learning materials as well as personnel were major steps taken by government in making basic education compulsory, truly free and accessible to all.
He expressed government's commitment to sustain the improvement and transformation of the educational sector, saying a number of interventions and programmes had been rolled out to achieve the set objectives.
Mr Asibigi said about 185 classroom blocks were being built in the region under the government's schools under trees and basic schools rehabilitation programmes.
Additionally, he said, the government was providing 30,000 dual desks to Ghana Education Service for distribution to all the 20 districts while some 10,000 bunk beds and 20,000 mattresses had been made available to senior high schools in the region.
The government is rehabilitating science resource centers in Bimbila, Nalerugu, Bole, Tamale, Damongo and Salaga to encourage the study of science.
At the Dahin Sheli School, Madam Ramatu Awudu told the GNA that about 20 new pupils had been admitted as at the time of the visit.
Alhaji Yahaya urged parents to provide their children with the requisite knowledge, technology and skills to make them become more functional to contribute meaningfully to nation building.
He called on the pupils to study hard by taking advantage of all the facilities available to them to become better citizens in order to contribute meaningfully to the nation's development.
Alhaji Yahaya advised them to shun bad behaviours that could destroy their future.
He expressed concern that in spite of the facilities made available by government some children still roamed the streets during school hours.
