The next New Patriotic Party administration will seek funding to increase training opportunities for psychiatrists in the country, according to NPP's Member of Parliament for Evalue-Gwira, Catherine Abelema Afeku.

Mrs. Afeku, who gave a snapshot of the NPP's 2012 campaign manifesto on health to its delegates at the Dome, Accra International Conference Centre on Saturday, bemoaned the insufficient number of psychiatrists in the country.

“For a nation of over 24 million people to have not more than five (5) psychiatrists, is a travesty”, she noted.

Mrs. Afeku also announced the intention of an Akufo-Addo administration should the party be voted into office on December 7th 2012, to fully implement the “original free maternal healthcare policy”, which was instituted in the previous NPP administration under President J.A Kufuor.

She asserted, "maternal mortality rate is still high".

She hinted of plans of a NPP administration if elected, to support the pharmaceutical industry to enable it manufacture quality malaria drugs locally.

Catherine Afeku said the NPP will restore confidence in the National Health Insurance Scheme which said “is collapsing”, and encourage private participation to improve it.
