Youth urged to develop passion for science and technology

Kumasi, Aug 17, GNA - Dr Kwaku Agyeman-Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister, has appealed to the youth, particularly students to take advantage of educational opportunities and facilities provided by the government to develop passion for science and technology.

He said they needed to avail themselves of programmes like the science, technology, mathematics and innovation education (STMIE), to enhance their marketability.

Dr Agyeman-Mensah said this in a speech read for him at the closing session of an STMIE camp in Kumasi on Friday.

It brought together 630 Junior High School (JHS) students from 25 out of the 27 districts in the region.

Sekyere-South District and the Asante-Mampong Municipality were the only areas not represented.

“Gender equality in STMIE, a driving force for rapid economic development in Ghana” was the theme.

The week-long programme was organised by the Ghana Education Service (GES) with support from the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.

Among its goals were to showcase benefits that could be derived from science, technical and vocational education, promote healthy educational competition among students and provide them with opportunities for networking and building synergies.

Added to these, were the introduction of innovations and creativity in a wide variety of areas for production of goods and services and to help demystify science and mathematics.

Dr Agyeman-Mensah said the challenges that faced the nation were not only diverse but also unique, and required creativity and innovation to tackle them.

“Indeed scientific innovation is a strong tool to move the country from incremental change to radical change.”
