COTONOU (AFP) - US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton flew out of the West African nation of Benin on Friday, ending a 10-day African tour, and headed for Turkey for talks on the conflict in Syria.
Clinton had arrived earlier Friday from Ghana, where she attended the funeral of president John Atta Mills. She stayed only briefly in Benin, where she met President Thomas Boni Yayi, the current chair of the African Union.
Details of their meeting were not given, but a senior US official lauded Benin's democratic credentials.
"Benin has been a model democracy since 1991," the official said.
"Like Ghana, they have had precedents of free, fair and transparent elections. Presidents have changed and also political parties have changed. They have also been a very strong development partner."
Clinton also visited Senegal, Uganda, South Sudan, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa and Nigeria on her African tour.
