Two officers from the Central Regional Police Command highway patrol team died in an accident while on duty along the Elmina-Cape Coast highway Monday.
The deceased, Inspector Richard Gyimah and Constable Philomena Kumah, 22, who had recently passed out from the police training school, died when a taxi driver crossed their path during their operation around 10.00 pm.
A third victim, Constable Dominic Amankwaah, was said to have received multiple head injuries and was flown to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, where he is said to be responding to treatment.
Briefing the press, the Deputy Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr Johnson Owusu Agyemang, said the accident occurred when the team was on official duty.
Mr Owusu Agyemang said the patrol team, which was moving along the Cape Coast-Elmina highway, crashed into a Toyota Land Cruiser that was coming from Takoradi, when a taxi driver recklessly attempted to overtake another vehicle at Abakam, near Iture on the highway.
He said the occupants of the Land Cruiser who might have escaped unhurt have since not reported to the police and the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit were investigating.
He said the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the Central Regional Hospital for post mortem.
He commended the Ghana Ambulance Service for assisting the police during the accident.
