OTTAWA, Canada, July 20, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“On behalf of all Canadians, I congratulate the people of Libya on holding successful, historic, democratic elections for a General National Congress, the first free elections in Libya after more than four decades of authoritarian rule.
“Canada welcomes the release of these preliminary election results, and we look forward to the formation of a new government that will continue to lead Libya down the path toward freedom and democracy. I am also pleased to see that Libyan women will have an important role in the General National Congress.
“As the Libyan people and their representatives move forward to create a free, stable and prosperous society, we urge them to uphold their international obligations, including the humane treatment of detainees and the protection of ethnic and migrant communities. Canada also calls for the full and equal participation of women from diverse backgrounds and fields at all levels of decision making.
“Canada will continue to help Libyans build a society that respects democracy, human rights and the rule of law.”
