EC satisfied with voter registration at Akuse

The Electoral Commission said it was satisfied with the biometric registration exercise at Akuse which ended Thursday evening.

Although the Commission was unable to determine whether the response from the residents were positive or not, it however stated that pockets of violence from those who wanted to disrupt the process, was curtailed immediately paving way for exercise to continue.

The Chief of Akuse, Nene Kuleape Tetriku sought a court injunction on the biometric registration over concerns that, Akuse was not appropriately placed under any region but the EC had gone ahead.

Principal Public Relations Officer of the EC, Sylvia Annor told Joy News the completion of the exercise Thursday would enable the Commission to finalize data on the new voters' register.

Meanwhile a youth leader who is one of the plaintiffs of a contempt case filed against the EC, George Amanor told Joy News many of them could not register because of intimidation by the police.

The Electoral Commission in April suspended biometric voters' registration for the people of Akuse due to boundary disputes over whether the town should be placed under the Greater Accra or Eastern regions.

The EC set 10th July, 2012 as date for the registration after a supreme court ruled that Akuse should be placed under the Eastern Region.
