JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Heavy snow in South Africa forced the closure of two main highways, cutting road transport links between the north and south, a transport official said on Saturday.

Central parts of two highways, that link the capital Pretoria and nearby Johannesburg in the north to Cape Town in the south, have been shut "due to heavy snowfall", said Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesman Ashraf Ismail.

"From Johannesburg to Cape Town there are no alternative routes to take," he added.

Heavy snow is common during the winter months in central South Africa.

Discussions with the hashtag #snow trended on Saturday on the social networking site Twitter.

Snowfall was forecast to continue throughout the day, but clear later on Saturday, according to the South African Weather Service.
