Ex-Zambian ambassador to US arrested in Denmark: police
COPENHAGEN (AFP) - A former Zambian ambassador to the United States, who is wanted in his home country on charges of corruption, has been arrested, Copenhagen police said on Tuesday.
"I can confirm that Attan Shansonga has been arrested. He appeared in court again today and was remanded for a further six days," a Copenhagen police duty officer told AFP.
He declined to give any further information on the case, saying only police were now "digging deeper into the issue".
He would not comment on reports in the Zambian Post that Shansonga had been arrested on Saturday.
According to the Post, Shansonga, who was his country's ambassador to Washington during the tenure of the late Zambian president Frederick Chiluba, was arrested by the Zambian Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in 2002 and charged with the theft of public funds.
The report said he fled Zambia in 2004 for Britain.
"He's been on the wanted list. The warrant was issued, so the matters are active and we are facilitating his extradition to Zambia," The Post Online quoted ACC Director Rosewin Wandi as saying.
