Accra, June 25, GNA – The Ministry of Trade and Industry task force on Monday called off its operations in Central Business District of Accra aimed at stopping retail trade by foreigners in the country.
Nana Akrasi Sarpong, Director of Communication at the Ministry, said the special operation was called off because some foreigners in the retail trade had information about the impending exercise and closed their shops.
He said no individual or group could be blamed for the leakage of information, and added that the operation would have been effective if the task force arrested the foreigners while working.
Nana Sarpong assured the public and Ghanaian business community that the task force, made up of personnel from the security agencies and other institutions, would at the appropriate time embark on the exercise.
Mr Daniel Aggrey, Vice Chairman of Ghana Union of Trade Associations, said members were not happy about the inability of the task force to undertake the operations, and was of the view that the team should have done its ground “and find out things for themselves”.
He said that some of the foreigners opened their shops for brisk business, and because the task force could not carry out the exercise, they (foreigners) continued with their trade transactions.
