The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) will launch its Northern Regional sector campaign for elections 2012 at Wulensi on July 2 , 2012.

The party will also use the launch to introduce its parliamentary candidate for the Wulensi Constituency, in the person of Mr. Damba Issah

This was disclosed to graphic.com.gh by the party’s founder and flagbearer, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, in a telephone chat at the weekend.

He declared, “we have a very credible and good candidate who is already on the ground working hard to win the December general election; this bye-election will therefore be used by the party to lay a strong claim to the seat and by God’s grace we will annex the constituency seat.”

Last week, the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr George Lawson, intimated that the NDC had already won the Wulensi seat.

In his view, the good works of the NDC over the last three-and-a-half years in government will win the NDC the seat.. Though the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has not come out with any predictions, observers believe that the NPP is also working on the quiet to annex the seat.

It would be recalled that the PPP was supposed to engage communities in and around Wulensi, Bimbilla and Salaga; all in the Northern Region, in an open grassroot campaign as its third leg national tour.

But as a sign of reverence for Ghanaian tradition, the party had to call off the tour of those areas to mourn with them the death of the sitting Member of Parliament for Wulensi, Alhaji Saani Iddi, who died recently, as the family puts it, “after a short illness.”

Mr Iddi died on June 4, 2012, and he has since been buried, according to the Islamic tradition.

As part of the programme, the party was expected to tour Wulensi and the other northern areas from June 13 and 14, 2012.

Already, the National Chairman of the PPP, Nii-Allotey Brew-Hammond, together with some party executives, visited the private residence of the late Alhaji Saani Iddi at Tema to greet and mourn with the family and also to enquire from them the details of the funeral arrangements.

The party also sent a delegation to the family home of the late Alhaji Iddi at Wulensi to express it condolences.

The Electoral Commission (EC), will on July 31, 2012, conduct the bye-election in the Wulensi Constituency.

It has, accordingly, fixed July 3 and 4, 2012 for the receipt of nomination forms between 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. on both days.

A statement issued by the EC is asking candidates seeking election to provide two recent passport sized photographs with a red background when they submit their nomination forms.

It said nomination forms might be obtained from the district office of the commission at Wulensi or at the Northern Regional Office of the EC in Tamale.

It said the filling fee for the elections was GH¢500 and asked all interested individuals and political parties to take note and act accordingly.
