21.06.2012 Press Statement

Attn: GHANA POLICE; STOP HOUNDING THE PRESS

Attn: GHANA POLICE; STOP HOUNDING THE PRESS
21.06.2012 LISTEN

The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) is by this statement urging the Ghana Police Service to halt the hounding of some press men in the country with immediate effect.

It is public knowledge that, following the publication of the police statement of Mr. Alfred Agbesi Woyome by the Crusading Guide and Daily Guide, the police have failed to make public, the actions taken thereafter to reprimand all those involved. Rather, the Police Service has continuously demonstrated that it is only hell- bent on verifying the source of the statement by going after the Editors of the newspapers as opposed to focusing on the substance of the issue.

AFAG sees a direct relationship on the conduct of the journalists in question, with the leadership paralysis we are saddled with in dealing decisively with the Woyome saga. When leadership fails to act decisively, to safeguard the interests of the people, well meaning citizens in the interest of the state are bound to adopt or deploy other means available to them to safeguard those interests. The conduct of the journalists should therefore be interpreted as such.

AFAG as a matter of public interest is therefore asking the police the following;

• Is the statement in hand (Crusading Guide and Daily Guide), the same as the one tendered in by Woyome?

• Did the statement bear the names of some senior public officials?

• Have the police invited them for questioning; or it's a case of them being above the law?

AFAG believes that the loss of over GH50million is a matter which should not be toyed with. The police should therefore be professional in discharging their constitutional duties to the Ghanaian people, on whose behalf they work. There is no cover up in this case.

Thank you.
