Catholic Bishop asks politicians to preserve national peace

Accra, June 21, GNA - The Catholic Bishop of Donkorkrom Apostolic Vicariate, on Wednesday observed that some politicians are exploiting the peace and unity of Ghana for their own interest.

The Most Reverend Gabriel Edoe Kumordjie therefore admonished them to be wary of their utterances and promote peace by their deeds and actions.

He made the observation in Accra at a two- day pre feast lectures of the Knights of St John International of the Catholic Church, to mark the 75th Anniversary of the organisation in the country.

Bishop Kumordjie called on Ghanaians to eschew discrimination because it is sin against God to deny the right of an individual by virtue of religion or ethnicity.

He explained that mankind belong to one family and that it is God who destined where one is born, whilst religion and language are not the choice of mankind but God's gift, hence the need to respect each other.

Bishop Kumordjie said Christian must be guided by the principle of peace, unity and reconciliation in the context of the family.

He said the absence of family unity leads to marriage break down.

“The family is the basic place where peace comes from because it is through the family that children learn how to forgive, talk, behave and socialise. The neglect of the family means abandoning God,” he added.

Bishop Kumordjie said there was the need for the country to strengthen the basic family whilst parents must take responsibility of the family because failure to do so would lead to children disobeying authority resulting in social vices.

He said relationship in the family must be based on truth and solidarity since people could live peacefully based on truth and understanding.

The Apostolic Vicariate noted that solidarity enhances peace and unity and any attempt to undermine that would likely lead to chaos.

Mr Emmanuel Eklu Afetsi, Secretary of Knights of St John International Catholic Church, Accra said the aim of the lectures was to foster peace towards the impending general election.

He said as part of activities to mark the Anniversary, the body has organised quiz competitions in addition to the lectures and would be climaxed by a thanksgiving service on June 30.
