Accra, June 18, GNA - Alhaji Mohammed Norgah, Osu-Klottey Sub-Metropolitan Assembly Chairman, has said the Better Ghana Agenda stands for development, good sanitation and clean environment and to ensure that people live free from diseases.
Addressing the residents at Adabraka in Accra on the Accra Plastic Waste Management Project (APWMP) programme, “Cash Your Trash”, he said the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) spends about GH¢ 4 million monthly in clearing refuse which could have been used for other needs.
Alhaji Norgah, who is also the Assemblyman for Adabraka, said the AMA realized the filth which were seen everywhere in Accra could create future problems and opted for the use of the collection of the plastic sachets waste as part of the Assembly's strategies of ensuring a clean environment.
He said as a result of the lackadaisical attitude towards personal hygiene and good sanitation practices in the communities, drains in Adabraka and Odorna were always choked with plastic waste often filled with human excreta.
Alhaji Norgah appealed to the public to assist the Assembly and partner agencies, such as Accra Plastic Waste Management and CHF International to rid the municipality of filth.
He said gave the assurance that the Sub-Metro would wage war on commuters and traders who were fond of littering and would ensure that the rules and regulations regarding development within Adabraka were obeyed.
A community resource person, Miss Jane Oku of the Accra Plastic Waste entreated the residents to keep their polythene and the plastic sachet waste safe at all times for a fee.
“Waste management is everybody's business,” she said and appealed to the citizenry to support the AMA in its quest to ensure that sanity prevailed on the streets and at the various communities.
The residents appealed to the Assembly to remove all fitting shop operators operating on the streets of Accra.
