President Humala welcomes UNIDO Director General
LIMA, Peru: Peruvian president Ollanta Moisés Humala Tasso, has warmly welcomed the director general of UNIDO, Kandeh Yumkella at his official residence - El Palacio del Gobierno in Lima, Peru while en route to Rio de Janeiro to attend the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio + 20).
At the government palace, president Humala discussed among other issues of mutual interest the need for UNIDO to establish its presence by opening a country office in the South American country and the possibility for Peru to host UNIDO's 2013 general conference.
For his part, Dr. Yumkella promised a strong working relationship with the government and people of Peru while noting that UNIDO stands ready to deploy its resources and expertise to support the industrialization and regional development efforts of the country in order to achieve job creation, alleviate the problems associated with poverty and to achieve universal energy access and modern energy services.
Also discussed at the meeting was the topic of “Green Industry and Green Growth.” Gladys Triveño, minister of Production later announced that the new UNIDO office will be located at her ministry.
