OTTAWA, Canada, June 12, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today welcomes Dr. Naeem Mohamed Abdurrahman al-Gheryani, Libya's Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, to Ottawa. The two discussed the progress of Libya's transition under its new leadership, as well as recent developments in the Middle East and North Africa.

The Canadian-Libyan bilateral relationship is a mutually respectful partnership based on common interests, including the promotion of democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law.

Canada remains active in the education sector in Libya. Academic relations established 30 years ago continue, and there is room for them to grow. There are about 500 Libyan students currently studying in Canadian educational institutions.

Canada was among the first countries to respond to last year's crisis in Libya, and it played a leading role in the UN-sanctioned, NATO-led mission, which saved the lives of thousands of innocent civilians.
