National Science And Maths Quiz Re-launched

The National Science and Maths Quiz that seeks to promote the study of the subjects in the country has been re-launched at a ceremony at Legon.

The re-launch was under the auspices of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prime Time Advertisers, Unilever Ghana Limited and Ghana Brewery Limited.

This year’s National Science and Maths Quiz will feature 40 participating schools namely; Wesley Girls Senior High School (SHS), Presbyterian Boys SHS, Tamale SHS, Kumasi High, Ola Girls SHS, Koforidua Secondary Technical, Akwawuman SHS and Kumasi Girls Senior High among others.

A competition was organised today as part of the re-launch between Akwamuman Senior High and Kumasi Senior High, and the former was adjudged winners.

The only difference in the 17th edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz is that this year’s edition would feature from the first to the fourth round.

Ms Binney said the government was placing a high premium on the teaching and learning of Science, Mathematics and Technology and the organisation of such quizzes to generate interest in the students.

In her address at the re-launch, the Director General of the GES, Ms Benedicta Naana Binney, stressed the need for Ghana to produce more scientists to manage the oil discovery.

She said there was the need for more mathematicians to teach in the schools as well as work alongside scientists to undertake research to come up with innovations that would make life bearable to the average Ghanaian.

She said science resource centres established years ago in the country were all being assessed to give science laboratories a face-lift that would enhance the teaching and learning of science.

She noted that school laboratories would be adequately resourced.

The Director General observed that Science and Mathematics which were seen as subjects that scared girls had now taken center stage in some girls SHSs, with girls collecting prizes in those subject areas.

Ms Binney, therefore, called on parents to support the GES and Prime Time by encouraging students to study and participate in Science and Mathematics quizzes by providing the needed reading materials.

She also commended Prime Time Advertisers for their good work towards improving the skills of the up and coming generations in an area crucial to the country.

The President of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), Mr Samuel Ofori-Adjei, for his part said technology had become very crucial, therefore there was the need for society to be current.

He noted that the interest the youth had in reading was gradually being eroded due to technology, and therefore stressed the need to combine theory with practicals.

Mr Ofori-Adjei also called on the students to make good use of the Compact Discs (CDs) which had been given to them.
