General News MILLS WELCOMES JJS OLIVE BRANCH -Says he has nothing against them
JUN 4, 2012 LISTEN

Following media reports that Jerry John Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu have finally had a positive change of heart and are determined to mend their differences with President John Atta Mills and his administration, the government says the move is very much welcoming news.

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Founder and former President, Jerry Rawlings and his political 'soul mate' and wife, Nana Konadu were reported by The Al-Hajj to be amenable to a resolution of their long-standing dispute with President Atta Mills, his government and party.

A credible but very dependable source close to a conversation in the home of the Rawlings few days before he emplaned to Turkey, told this paper that the move which is to allow Mr. & Mrs. Rawlings to fully participate in the 2012 political campaign, is also to ensure that President Mills and the NDC deny New Patriotic Party (NPP) 'troublesome' presidential candidate, Nana Akufo Addo any shred of opportunity of taking over the reins of power in the upcoming crucial December polls.

It was agreed at the meeting that a supposedly 'neutral' group be put in place to push harder the 'unity-at-cost' agenda, using all possible and lawful means. And this culminated in the formation only last week of a youth group calling themselves NDC Activists For Unity At All Cost (NDC AFUAC) who held a press conference at Nima and stated:

“we are calling for an urgent resolution and ironing out of political and personal differences between H.E President Mills and his surrogates on one hand, and NDC founder and former president H.E Flt. Lt. JJ Rawlings, former first lady NANA KONADU AGYEMAN – RAWLINGS and their staunch supporters on the other hand”.

Reacting to this piece of news yesterday, a senior government source told The Al-Hajj that “this is very welcome news you know, the president is excited with this new development and is looking forward to the formal concretization of this dream, which he believes is long overdue”.

According to the source, much as the President was highly convinced he did nothing untoward to have incurred the constant and unrelenting barrage of criticisms and sometimes, outright insults from the former first couple, he nevertheless believes, it would be in their own interest, (Rawlings, Konadu and he, Mills) as well as the interest of the teeming thousands of NDC supporters, sympathizers and well-wishers to demonstrate unshakable unity and togetherness going into the crucial 2012 polls.

“President Mills has and continues to hold the founder in high esteem; he nevertheless, is human and would have loved the over a decade mutual respect and reverence he has shared with his former boss and mentor did not come to this. But all is not lost, at least our millions of supporters, sympathizers and well-wishers would now heave a sigh of relief”. The source stated.

It would be recalled that The Al-Hajj some few weeks past reported that the 2012 flagbearer and leader of NDC, John Mills was critically considering bowing out of the December elections and quitting politics altogether to save his image from a 'possible slaughter from the founder and his wife'.

The paper quoted a source who said “the president, like all mortals is getting to his elastic end in as far as the unwarrantable and inexorable assault on his person, his government and the party by NDC founder, Jerry John Rawlings and his cohorts continues and he will most likely throw in the towel by opting out of this year's crucial polls and quitting politics all together,” a source close to the President told The Al-Hajj on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter for now.

As if to authenticate their (Mr. & Mrs. Rawlings) new positive position, the Daily Post (an NDC sympathetic paper close to the Rawlingses) in its yesterday edition reported how former president Rawlings swerved and surprised many of his critics and cynics with the kind of conciliatory speech he delivered at the rally at Aflao marking the 33rd anniversary celebration of the June 4th uprising.

Basking in self-glorification, the paper wrote “first of all, as the Daily Post had published, he (Rawlings) did not launch a new political party as some had said he will. Rawlings did not even talk about forming a new one…

“Secondly, it was not a boom speech. He did not directly attack President Mills as some prayed and others feared he would. He criticized the Mills government in general, said it had entered a ditch and that the NDC will lose the December elections if those at the helm of affairs continue to distance themselves from the June 4 principles of Probity and Accountability”.
