PRESBYTERIANS EARN COMMENDATION FROM HIGH COMMISSIONER TO UK
The second Overseas Congregations' Conference of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, has ended here in London last Sunday, May 27, with commendation from Ghana's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, His Excellency, Prof. Kwaku Danso-Boafo. He said Ghanaians owe the Presbyterian Church a debt of gratitude and appreciation for the role the Church continues to play in the country's Educational and Health sectors since independence to date.
His Excellency Prof. Danso-Boafo, opening the conference, said as a Presbyterian himself, who had the privilege of receiving Presbyterian education, he is aware that there are many Ghanaians especially those in the rural areas who are today very grateful to the Church because but for the Presbyterian Church most of them would not have had education.
He said the Presbyterian Church deserves every commendation for not only championing education in Ghana but also playing a key role in the country's Health care delivery.
The High Commissioner said he was not surprised the Church has turned its attention to the Diaspora and making inroads in these countries where there are considerable numbers of Ghanaian communities and bringing them together in the fear of God.
Touching on politics, Professor Danso-Boafo said he was happy to see the Presbyterian Church's motto “That they all may be one” which he believes shows the unity of the Church and called on the leaders to help in the fight to unite Ghanaians especially as the country goes to the polls in December.
His Excellency President John Evans Atta Mills, he said, is committed to conducting a free, fair and transparent elections in December and charged the Church to assist by educating the congregation on the need for each and every Ghanaian to conduct him or herself in a manner that will promote peace before, during and after the elections.
“Ghana is the only home we have” Prof. Danso -Boafo said, “that is why we should count ourselves very lucky to have the peace the country is enjoying today”, emphasising that since 1957, Ghana has been a trail blazer on the African continent and continues to play a leading role in the affairs of the continent.
It was therefore important that as the country goes to the polls and world attention is turned to it, Ghana continues to play the leadership role it has played since independence by making the elections a peaceful one.
“If all Africans can be united as one people” he said, “as the Presbyterian Church's motto calls for, what would be the continent's problem”?
“Let us therefore be proud of ourselves as sons and daughters of Ghana, the Black Star of Africa”, he said.
As a people, the High Commissioner said, we should thank God for the piece of land he has bestowed on us on which the country harvests food, mines gold, oil and other mineral resources and from which we first derived our name the 'Gold Coast'.
Prof. Danso-Boafo congratulated the Church for a successful conference and assured them of the High Commission's preparedness at all times to assist Ghanaians and urged them not to hesitate in coming with any problem bordering on their wellbeing in the UK.
Preaching the sermon to close the conference on the theme “Come Holy Spirit, Give Us Love” the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Professor Emmanuel Martey said, the conference was ending on Pentecost Day, a day on which God poured out the Holy Spirit on all believers, that is why he was urging the congregation to allow the Holy Spirit to lead them in all their endeavours.
The Moderator also prayed that in this year of elections in Ghana, the Holy Spirit guide the country and her leaders to conduct the December elections in a peaceful atmosphere.
Representatives of the Church came from all over the world with the Moderator, Rt. Rev Professor Martey leading the Ghana delegation which included Rev. Herbert Anim-Opong, Clerk of Synod, Rev. Owusu Sarpong, Chairman of the Brong Ahafo Presbytery and Rev. W. K. Ofoso-Addo, Director Mission and Evangelism.
