With barely six months for Ghanaians to go to the polls, former President John Agyekum Kufour has noted that the country is at a crossroads.
The former president suggested Ghanaians should unite in a concerted effort to build on the country's peace and stability, rather than partake in conducts that would negatively affect the peace.
'Ghana is fortunate as compared to other countries… in spite of our varied religious backgrounds and different tribes, we are still able to tolerate each other. We have to do everything possible to sustain the peace and happiness God has bestowed on us', Mr. Kufour noted on Wednesday in a short address to a group of Muslim Chiefs who visited him at his Airport West residence in Accra.
The Muslim delegation was from the National Council of Zongo Muslim Chiefs and they paid a courtesy call on Mr. Kufour to officially inform him about an upcoming conference which would discuss the development and welfare of Zongo communities in Ghana.
The former President told the delegation that the country would be left behind 'if we do not put right measures in place' to sustain the economy.
This, he said, was because of the fast pace at which the world was growing.
Chief Umaru Baba Issah, Public Relations Officer of the National Council of Muslim Chiefs explained that they chose to invite Mr. Kufuor because of a long standing cordial relationship that exists between the former president and the Zongo communities before, during and after his tenure as President of Ghana.
The theme of the upcoming conference is 'Peace, development and welfare of Muslims in Zongo communities in Ghana' and has been scheduled for Accra from June 15 to 17, 2012.
'After the conference, we will tour all the Muslim communities in the 10 regions of Ghana to preach about the need to sustain peace of the nation as we get closer to elections. We will also inculcate in them a sense of discipline and also let them know the importance of education, so they can send their children to school', Chief Baba Issah added.
