Kumasi, May 30, GNA - A Kumasi Circuit Court has remanded a 40-year-old farmer into prison custody for threatening to kill his wife with a gun.
Kofi Antwi is facing charges of threat of death, unlawful possession of fire arm and assault.
He pleaded not guilty and was ordered to re-appear on Tuesday, June 5.
Police Inspector Daniel Opoku told the court presided over by Justice Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey that the accused and Comfort Tieku are married and live at Kromoase New Site, a suburb of Kumasi.
For some time now, Antwi has been subjecting the wife to severe beatings at the least provocation.
On May 26, the accused beat up and insulted the woman for coming home late from church service.
Comfort informed her brother who counselled that she spent the night with the mother at Aburaso to allow tempers to calm down.
He also offered to speak with the brother in-law.
The prosecution said following the intervention of the brother, the woman returned to her matrimonial home.
The prosecution said while the wife was asleep with her children, Antwi picked a single-barrelled gun hidden under a chair in the room, woke her up and hit her thigh several times with the butt.
He told her to thank “her stars” that he did not have any ammunition otherwise he would have shot her dead.
Comfort for fear of her life did not utter a word and waited till the next morning before running to inform her brother, who arrested the accused person and handed him over to the police.
In his caution statement, he denied the offence. The gun has since been seized by the police.
