Protect The Recruits

The reaction of the authorities at the Kumasi Police Training School towards recruits from whom monies were extorted by their drill instructors is anything but acceptable.

Although the Commandant of the school, Mr. Nuhu Jango, has denied that there is any official decision to extend the passing out date of the recruits, the sulking instructors are making life very difficult for the recruits.

The punishment is intended to smoke out the source of the extortion story which caused worrying embarrassment to the Police Administration.

Following the revelation in the media, some of the suspected instructors are said to have descended on the recruits with an unusual vengeance.

While doing so, they have on the quiet promised to refund what they have extorted so far, an interesting development which authenticates the report.

We are pleased at the reaction of the Police Administration in ordering an investigation into the anomalous conduct of the instructors.

It was amazing and ironic that drill instructors, whose contribution towards moulding the young men and women from the civilian street into smart and disciplined cops is immense, would conduct themselves in such a disgraceful manner .

It can only be imagined the effects of such demands on the cops who must pay lest they are subjected to punitive extra drill on the drill square.

While doffing our hats for the IGP's order of an investigation into the story, we plead that he ensures that the recruits who might not even be the source of the story, are protected from the wrath of the instructors.

Whoever is responsible for bringing the anomaly to the notice of the public, and eventually the IGP, should be congratulated no matter who they are. The information which has triggered the investigation which is supposed to be going on now is a sure way of cleansing the police system in the country.

It is for this reason that we disagree with any attempt at making life uncomfortable for the recruits simply because they are suspected to be the source of the leakage.

As for the extension of their graduation date, which thankfully Chief Superintendent Jango has denied, we pray that it is really not true.

Refunding the extorted monies is not enough. The culprits should be dealt with administratively in line with the prevailing regulations.

The image of the Police Administration should be protected from further blemish, especially from those who are supposed to impart discipline to recruits.

When the report of the investigations is ready, it would be in the interest of the Police and the nation to make it public.
