Accra, May 24, GNA – The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Thursday scored 52.6% to lead the table of political parties whose officials and supporters used indecent expressions on radio, a report by Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) revealed.
An MFWA monitoring report for the sixth week (May 6-12) made available to the Ghana News Agency in Accra said 17 out of the 19 indecent expressions were made by supporters and affiliates of the NPP and ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The breakdown showed that NPP: 10 indecent expressions; NDC: 7 indecent expressions; PNC: 1 indecent expression; and affiliation not established: one indecent expression.
The 11 monitoring reports which contained indecorous expressions had a total of 19 indecent expressions. The breakdown of the 19 indecent expressions indicates that 11 insulting and offensive comments were made; four made an unsubstantiated allegations; three innuendoes and one expressions promoting divisiveness.
The project by MFWA with funding from STAR-Ghana, a multi- donor pooled funding mechanism funded by DFID, DANIDA, EU and USAID to increase the influence of civil society and Parliament in the governance of public goods and service delivery.
The funding seeks to ultimately improve the accountability and responsiveness of Ghana's government, traditional authorities and the private sector.
A total of 51 monitoring reports were received on 28 out of the 31 radio stations being monitored under the project. Ten of these reports contained indecent expressions which were captured on seven radio stations.
The report mentioned individuals who made the insulting and offensive comments to include Mr Ahmed Karim Bediako of the NPP– during a Newspaper Review programme on URA Radio aired on May 7.
Others are Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, NPP MP for Manhyia Constituency– during Fox FM's Morning Drive programme of May 8; Mr Kwabena Senkyire of the NPP – on Fox FM's Morning Drive programme of May 8; and Mr Akwesi Ofori Agyemang (Zuba) of the NDC – also on Fox FM's Morning Drive programme of May 8.
The rest are Mr Buabeng-Asamoah of the NPP – on Kessben FM's Maakye programme aired on May 9; Mr Chris Dugan of FONKAR (a group within the NDC that supports former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings) – two expressions on Classic FM's Big Breakfast Show aired on May 9; and Mr Kofi Adoma Wawani, a news anchor of Adom FM's Evening News aired on May 10 read a text message that contained an insulting and offensive comment from a listener whose name was not even mentioned.
Mr Abu Ramadan of PNC – during Oman FM's Boiling Point programme of May 8; Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover of NPP – during Oman FM's Boiling Point programme of May 10; Mr Ernest Owusu-Bempah of FONKAR – also on Oman FM's Boiling Point programme of May 10.
On unsubstantiated allegations Mr Ishmael Butler of NDC – during Kessben FM's Maakye programme of May 8; Alhaji Bature of the NDC –in an interview on Kessben FM's Maakye programme aired on May 12; Mr Chris Dugan of FONKAR – on the Big Breakfast Show programme of Classic FM which was aired on May 9 and Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover of NPP – during Oman FM's Boiling Point programme aired on May 10.
On innuendoes, Mr John Donyina of NPP – on Classic FM's Big Breakfast Show aired on May 9; Mr Hopeson Adoye of NPP – on Oman FM's Boiling Point programme of May 8; and Mr Ahmed Baba of NPP – during Hot Issues on North Star FM on May 11.
The report cited Mr Adomako Baafi of NPP –during Oman FM's Boiling Point programme of May 8, for making divisive comments.
It said two people were found to have used more than one indecent expression: Mr Chris Dugan of FONKAR and Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover of NPP.
Mr Chris Dugan was cited as making three (3) of the indecent expressions recorded last week, again made three (3) of the indecent expressions this week.
Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, who made five (5) of the indecent expressions recorded last week, made two of the indecent expressions this week.
It is worth noting that as a policy, the MFWA has decided not to publish the indecent expressions people make since it will amount to rebroadcasting of those remarks.
The MFWA has been urging radio stations to desist from the replay of indecent expressions on their networks since they tend to amplify such expressions and their potentially negative ramifications.
Thus, the rebroadcasting of the specific indecent expressions recorded in this monitoring exercise will amount to the same inappropriate action.
The specific expressions made by people cited in the reports are, however, available at the MFWA.
