Accra Committee of Chicago Sister Cities supports AHISCO

The Accra committee of the Chicago Sister Cities International, an American based organisation, has presented assorted books to the Accra High School at a ceremony in Accra.

The books, which included novels, textbooks and dictionaries, are to help inculcate reading habits in the students and to improve their academic performance.

The presentation formed part of the organisation’s objective of promoting social and economic development.

The Chicago Sister Cities International is an organisation in Chicago in the United States (US) with about 30 sister cities in different countries.

It is made up of natives of the various sister cities that reside in Chicago, and raise funds to help various communities in the country they come from.

The Accra Committee of the organisation, therefore, is made up of natives of Accra who reside in Chicago.

Presenting the books at a function at the school, the Co-chairman of the Accra committee of the organisation, Ms Linda Quarshie, noted that they were the face of Accra in Chicago, and had raised funds abroad to cater for the needs of some institutions in Accra.

She said the presentation to the school was informed by the chairman of the organisation, Mr Robert Acquaye, who is a past student of the school.

She expressed optimism that the books would go a long way to help the students in their academic work.

Ms Quarshie advised the students to study hard in order to become very responsible persons to help develop the country in the future.

The Headmistress of the school, Mrs Betty Aduhene Chinbuah, who received the books on behalf of the school thanked the representatives of the organisation for the kind gesture shown to the school.

She noted that the donation had come at a very crucial time when they were thinking of how best to improve the library.

She added that the library lacked computers, Internet facilities and other books, which could enhance the teaching and learning process in the school, and assured the donors that they would ensure that the books were properly taken care of.

She asked all past students of the school and other corporate organisations to come to the aid of the school to support in developing the students.

The Board chairman of the school, Dr Ashong Katai, entreated the students to make good use of the books by regularly visiting the library in order to improve on their academic performance.

He expressed optimism that more of such support would come from the organisation and others who want a bright future for children in the country.

“The end result of it all should be that Ghana will be a better place for all of us”, he added.

The organisation had already presented some books to the Ghana Library Board, Accra Girls Senior High School, Joy FM and the Oasis Training Academy in Kumasi.
