Treated Net campaign takes off in Sunyani Municipality

Yawhima (B/A), May 24, GNA – Sunyani Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the Municipal Health Directorate, on Wednesday launched the Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Net (LLIN) hang-up campaign at Yawhima to kick-off the exercise in the Municipality.

The campaign is part of a national strategy by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to protect every household from mosquito bites to curb malaria in the country.

The exercise, which will last for 10 days, will cover 149,473 registered households earmarked for distribution of 84,538 treated nets.

In a speech read for him at the launch, Mr. Kwasi Oppong-Ababio, Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, said the government would continue to commit more resources to the health sector, notably in building hospitals, health centres and clinics.

Mr. Samuel Kwasi Addo, acting Sunyani Municipal Director of Health Services, said Yawhima and its environs would benefit from 3,100 of the nets.

He said previous campaigns did not achieve the desired objectives because of the unwillingness or uncooperative attitude of the people or households and appealed to households to cooperate with the volunteers to ensure the success of the campaign.

Mr. Kwasi Lampo, Municipal Coordinator for National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), appealed to volunteers in the exercise to be honest and avoid exploiting particularly illiterate and ignorant households through extortion of monies from them.

Madam Theresa Addae, Principal Community Health Nurse at New Dormaa Sub-Municipal Health Directorate in Sunyani, said the campaign was not a political programme and both volunteers and beneficiary households must therefore not politicize it.

She said the essence of the programme was for our good health and that it was not being executed by a particular political party but rather the government through the Ministry of Health and the GHS.

Madam Addae said during the registration process they had problems and some of the households refused to register because of their political inclinations.

“We had to explain extensively to them the exercise was for their safety and good health”, she added.
