Ho May 23, GNA- Ms Comfort Agbadza, Deputy Volta Regional Director of Nursing Services on Wednesday exhorted young nurses to be humble and respectful towards their senior colleagues and the public.
“The community expects us to show respect to them,” explaining that such virtue would facilitate the psychological healing of the sick and put smiles on their faces.
Ms Agbadza was speaking at the launch of this year's Nurses week celebration in the region at Ho.
It was on the theme: “Nurses and Midwives; Caring and Advocating Peaceful 2012 National Election.”
Ms Agbadza said arrogant and disrespectful behaviour towards the sick would drive them away to seek healing from non-professionals who respect and treat them humanely.
She said patients feel irritated when the attention of a nurse attending to them is engaged on the mobile-phone other than the problems that brought them to the hospital.
Ms Agbodza said technology and professional reforms have softened the ground for nursing and this must reflect in quality service delivery.
She called for co-operation and respect among nurses so that they could maximise the “tender- loving- care” to the public.
In an address read on his behalf, the Regional Minister Mr Henry Ford Kamel urged nurses to educate their patients to appreciate politics as a platform for trading different ideas for developing the country rather than as a spring board for violence.
He expressed the hope that the region would remain as peaceful during the December elections as it did during the recent Biometric Voter Registration exercise.
Ms Innocentia Gborgblornyo, Regional Chairperson of the Ghana Registered Nurses' Association said the body would from next year institute an awards scheme to mark the nurses' week in the region.
She said Nurses week should be celebrated as a national event to attract government and public participation as it is done in other countries.
Ms Gborgblorvor said the role of nurses was central to quality health delivery and this must show in the conduct of nurses in the country.
