A joint press conference has been held, Tuesday, to officially announce the return of the Democratic Freedom Party to the ruling National Democratic Congress.

Vice President John Mahama is leading a crack team of NDC bigwigs to usher in the DFP members who broke away in 2007 after falling out with the founder of the NDC, Jerry Rawlings.

Former Chairman of the NDC Obed Asamoah who led the breakaway, was present together with the then deputy General Secretary of the NDC Bede Ziedeng.

The return of the DFP comes at a time the NDC appears to be on loggerheads with the Rawlingses.

Joy News' Presidential Correspondent, Seth Kwame Boateng who was present at the conference said both parties were in high spirits.

He said the NDC considers the DFP return a high point in their campaign, and needed the party bigwigs to be present during merger formalities.

The DFP said the decision to return to the NDC was taken by an Assembly of 45 members across the country with the promise to work hard to retain the NDC in power in the December elections.

Reading a joint statement, The General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia said as part of the merger all regional executives of the NDC must include a DFP member.

He however asked all DFP members to re-apply for their status as NDC members to be restored.
