The 2012 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, has stressed the need for Ghana to fight corruption and reduce the menace as much as possible, if it is to make any progress in its development agenda.
Speaking at a youth forum at the Kumasi Polytechnic last Friday in Kumasi as part of his nationwide 'Tour to Restore Hope', the NPP leader gave the assurance that 'under my leadership, there would be no Woyome kind of alleged corruption.
'Huge sums of money will not be paid to undeserving people under controversial circumstances, without recourse to due process.'
He said corruption was on the rise in Ghana today, because lawlessness was thriving rapidly under President Mills, 'and that must stop.'
The NPP flagbearer asked whether President Mills should be re-elected to serve a second term because of his self-acclaimed unprecedented achievements, to which the thousands of people gathered at the premises of the polytechnic answered with a loud no.
Nana Addo observed: 'Everywhere I've been in our country, the response has been the same. The Ghanaian people say President Mills has, instead of a better Ghana, brought poverty and hardship on them, and made their lives worse off, since he became President.'
He continued: 'President Mills promised to reduce fuel prices, as well as the prices of goods and commodities, but he ended up increasing all their prices drastically. He promised to put money in our pockets, but ended up creating holes in our pockets.'
Nana Addo said the NPP would come back, God willing, to strengthen all the social interventions introduced during the tenure of former President Kufuor to cushion the poor, which the NDC has failed to manage properly.
He mentioned the National Health Insurance Scheme, School Feeding Programme, free maternal healthcare and the capitation grant amongst others, as some of these programmes.
He reiterated his commitment to providing free senior high school education for all, adding, 'That is the only way we can gradually bring to an end, this dangerous canker of youth unemployment.'
He stressed the need for the government to empower the private sector to create more jobs for the youth.
Nana Addo pleaded with the Ghanaian people to support and vote massively for him and the NPP, to ensure that all the laudable policies and programmes the party has for the Ghanaian people can be implemented to the benefit of all.
