EPA sensitizes religious leaders on noise pollution

Koforidua, May 21, GNA - As part of efforts to reduce noise in the New Juaben Municipality, the Eastern Regional office of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has organized a one-day workshop for religious bodies.

The workshop was to sensitize the religious leaders on the effects of prolonged exposure to noise.

Ms Jamilatu Yaro, Programmes Officer of the EPA said the office had received various complaints on noise pollution, hence the need for the sensitization.

Ms Yaro defined noise as any sound which was undesired by the recipient, saying that for humans, hearing was normally limited to frequencies between 50 and 60 decibels (dB).

She said noise pollution could cause deafness and could also change the skin temperature and blood circulation. It was also capable of affecting the levels of hormones and increase in the rate of heart beat, blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases.

She urged the religious leaders to stick to the noise limit of the EPA to help reduce noise pollution in the municipality.

Participants were also taken through the EPA permitting conditions.
