The Electoral Commission has said persons found to have inadvertently registered twice in the just ended biometric voter's registration exercise will have one of their voter identity cards reclaimed and destroyed.
According to the Electoral Commission, the names of the persons who registered more than once would be published in the dailies so they can come forward with the extra cards for the EC to determine why and how the double registration occurred.
This the EC says is to prevent the cards from being used unlawfully to disrupt the smooth electoral process.
The Director of Information and Communication Technology Department of the EC, Gilbert Akomea said the retraction of the cards will help clean the register, which is in the process of being compiled.
Mr. Akomea said, 'for those who have done what we call unintentional double registration, we're going to go into a process of recalling one of the ID cards and this is where we're going to use the media.”
'It is right for us and lawful for us to take back the first ID card so that they might not use it to defraud the system so these are some of the things we'd be doing to eliminate the double registration.”
He added: 'We'd come out with the list of the people we've been chasing and we cannot find, so that when they see themselves in the newspapers they would show up at the district offices for us to determine whether they did the registration intentionally or not. There are some cases which are complex and we'd need to find the people.'
