President Kufuor receives Dr Allison Wiley-Candela Award

Accra, May 17, GNA - Former President John Agyekum Kufuor on Thursday received the Dr Allison Wiley-Candela Award for his immense contribution towards uplifting humanity.

The presentation was made by Dr Allison Wiley, NGO Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council in Accra.

A statement issued by Mr Frank Agyekum, Spokesperson and Special Aide at the Office of Former President Kufuor said " Part of the citation, by the US Congress, that accompanied the medal read: “In recognition of your achievements during your tenure as the President of Ghana and your continuous and active service to humanity as a senior citizen.”

The award was presented on behalf the Candela Medicals Limited of the US, organisers of a three-day Executive Health Seminar currently underway in Accra.

The aims of the seminar include the “recognition for the need to harness the potentials of senior citizens and the aged through the promotion of healthy and productive old age.”

President Kufuor thanked the Candela group for the honour done him and urged all to practice healthy life styles.

In another development, Mr Jea-Min Kyun, Ambassador of Republic of Korea (ROK) to Ghana accompanied by Mr Young-Jin Kim, Member of the National Assembly ROK, who is on a three-visit to Ghana, called on President Kufuor in Accra.

President Kufuor praised the Republic of Korea for the great strides they had made in developing their country in the last 50 years, which had placed them among the more advanced economies in the world.

He said Ghanaians were inspired by the achievements of ROK and desirous of learning how they were able to make it since both countries had similar economic growth indexes about five decades ago.

Mr Kyun praised President Kufuor for his leadership style while in office which earned him world-wide admiration.

He said numerous opportunities that kept coming his way after leaving office was a testament to his good works, adding that, he was placed in the same category as Former Presidents “Nelson Mandela of South Africa and Jimmy Carter of the United States.”

Both President Kufuor and Mr Kyun called for closer collaboration between the Parliaments, educational institutions and private sector of the two countries.

Among those present were Dr Anthony Ossei, Medical Director of Candela Medicals and Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, former Executive Director of Ghana Health Service.
