Alhaji Osumanu Mohammed, the Sekondi constituency vice chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a die-hard supporter of the Rawlingses, has defected to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Addressing a press conference in Sekondi, the former Sekondi constituency vice chairman stated that he was not happy about the way and manner in which the President Mills-led government was deviating from the principles and ethics on which the NDC was founded.

According to him, the unfolding events within the NDC and government were an indication that there was an agenda to clandestinely oust the Rawlingses from the NDC.

'In the NDC today, the Rawlingses have been declared axis of evil in the party to the extent that anything Rawlings or Konadu has become a target for destruction', he alleged.

Alhaji Osumanu lamented that the NDC government, since assuming political power, had done nothing to better the lot of Muslims in the Sekondi Zongo community even though the ruling party touted itself as a pro-Muslim political party in the country.

'All the good things you can see at Sekondi Zongo today is as a result of our efforts as a Muslim community with the assistance of Hon. Papa Owusu-Ankomah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Sekondi in spite of the fact that the NDC always win majority of the votes from Sekondi Zongo,' he added.

He disclosed that Hon. Owusu-Ankomah assisted the community with 100 bags of cement and other items for the construction of the Sekondi Central Mosque close to the Sekondi Gyendu Park, and supplied some Muslims with mats for prayers.

The former NDC kingpin noted that the Sekondi MP again assisted the Sekondi Zongo community to construct the Sunniyya Junior High School and constructed a computer laboratory for the cluster of schools within the Zongo community.

He added that over the years, the NPP MP had assisted most of the Muslim youth within the community with job placements and instituted a special support scheme to assist brilliant but needy students from Sekondi Zongo.

'It is now evident that the NDC has lost focus and has no vision to drive this nation and so therefore, I, Alhaji Osmanu Mohammed, has no choice than to quit the NDC and join the NPP,' he stressed.

He pointed out that the NPP had over the years demonstrated quality leadership and good governance and had also proved to be pro-Muslim by always nominating a Muslim as its running mate.

'The NPP believes in the development of the three northern regions and therefore established the Northern Development Fund now called Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA)', he said.
