UT BANK Supports Accra Psychiatric Hospital

Accra, May 14, GNA -Dr Akwasi Osei, the Chief Psychiatrist of the Ghana Health Service, said the Accra Psychiatric Hospital would continue with its programme of reuniting treated patients with their families so as to reduce the number of patients on admission.

He said the hospital's target was to cut down on the number of inmates to 300 to ensure that they were adequately catered for while promoting community rehabilitation.

“We are working to see how we can cut down on the number of inmates to 300 to ensure that they are adequately catered for,” Dr Osei said during a presentation to the hospital by the Welfare of the Adabraka Branch of UT Bank.

UT Bank supported the painting, re-roofing and refurbishment as well as making a donation of 50 students' mattresses valued at GH¢ 7,000 to the hospital as part of its contribution to uplifting the standard of living of the inmates.

Currently, there are 900 patients on admission while there are only 450 beds available in the hospital and Dr Osei said congestion at the hospital was a major problem as very often families did not come back for their treated relatives.

Dr Osei said the hospital had been plagued with many challenges, including the lack of funds to meet the daily running of activities in the hospital.

He expressed the hope that the Mental Health law would go a long way to ensure adequate funding to cater for all mentally challenged persons and ensure a community oriented care for mental patients.

Mrs. Sophia Lissah, Media and Public Relations Manager of the UT Group, said the support of the Adabraka branch Welfare was in recognition of the good job the hospital authorities were doing in the face of the challenges they encountered.
