The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Afotey Agbo has called on the fishermen in Accra to adopt similar position on issues regarding fishing activities.
The minister, who doubles as Member of Parliament (MP) for Kpone constituency, said government was aware of issues regarding pair trawling, use of lights and other destructive fishing methods, stressing that it appears fishermen are divided over the issue and the only way government can serve their interest is for them to act collectively.
As a government we have taken steps to strengthen and enforce fisheries regulation and protect fisheries resource, he said.
He said these during the installation of 20 new chief fishermen in the Greater Accra region in Accra.
He said the patrol vessels had enable the enforcement teams to arrest 10 industrial vessels engaged in nefarious activities, adding that they have been fined US$500,00.
He said subsiding premix fuel has reduced corruption and led to the judiciously use of revenue to execute developmental projects in various communities.
He urged parents to invest in the education of children school since they are the future leaders of this country.
It is the only way of ensuring our future security because these children will not only look after us but also use the acquired knowledge to protect our fishing business in the future.
He urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to advantage of the opportunity to learn lessons from the just-ended biometric voting registration and put in place necessary measures to enhance the December general elections.
Hon. Afotey Agbo advised the fishermen to adopt family planning so as to enable them cater for their children.
The Director of Fisheries, Samuel Quatey, charged the Ghana national canoe fishermen council to document their procedure of appointing chief fishermen so that government would be able to resolve problems that may arise.
The chief fisherman of Kpone, Nii Tetteh Ashong II, called on all the fishermen to support the council for the nation to benefit from their handiwork.
