Minister of Local Government ends tour of newly created assemblies

Accra, May 10, GNA – Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, has ended a two-day tour to some newly created assemblies in Accra, with a call on members to work tirelessly to promote development.

He urged them to unite and build consensus in order to ensure the survival of the assemblies and endeavour to include the chiefs and opinion leaders in the decision making process.

The Minister was accompanied on the trip by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, and the Deputy Regional Minister Nii Djamgba Vanderpuiye.

The officials ascertained the level of preparedness of the assemblies pending their inauguration in June.

The assemblies visited included La Dadekotopon, La Nkwantanan and Ga Central Municipalities and Ada West, Ningo Prampram and Kpone District Assemblies.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said the creation of the new assemblies was aimed at breaking governance into smaller units to create effective and efficient services, as well as make governance accessible to the people.

He said the best way to develop was to entrust decision making into the hands of the people, adding that decentralisation process was an effective way to bring government and development to the door steps of the people.

Nii Afotey Agbo said government found it appropriate to create new assemblies in order to fasten the process of development in these areas and reduce the burden on the existing assemblies.

He urged the new assemblies to be appreciative of government's efforts, and to work hard, saying “the... assemblies were brought here to quicken the pace of development, and so you have to work hard in order for all the aspirations to materialise”.
