THE MPOHOR Wassa East Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Western region, John Nyonator has said that politics and elections are not about fighting but a civic responsibility to choose leaders to govern the country.

He has therefore condemned those who indulge in violence during political discourses and voting stressing they do not understand the rights and responsibilities of a citizen.

Nyonator made the remarks at Sekyere Krobo on Citizenship Day recently to remind Ghanaians to be genuine citizens who contribute their quota towards building a quality and development-oriented society where love and unity permeate all spheres of life.

He pointed out that good citizens must participate effectively in decision-making at all levels of governance and also guard their utterances and deeds without jeopardizing the country's democracy.

Stephen Badu, Mpohor Wassa East District Director of the National Service Scheme who spoke on the theme: Stand Up for Ghana,' pointed out that a good citizen must be responsible and hard working.

He noted that every citizen of Ghana should cultivate the spirit of volunteerism, obey the laws of the land, pay taxes and eschew all vices adding 'those who keep criminals are equally liable and can be arrested and charged with aiding and abetting crime.'

Badu explained that personal and environmental cleanliness, respecting the rights of others and protecting state property were among the obligations expected of a good citizen.

He entreated the people of Sekyere Krobo to be positive minded and go by the maxim of US President John F Kennedy who said 'ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.'
