Accra Poly Gets New Rector

The Accra Polytechnic, the nation’s premiere polytechnic has appointed Dr Sylvester Achio as the new Rector of the Polytechnic.

He takes over from Dr Festus Addo-Yobo, the current Rector who is due for retirement on June 30, 2012.

Prior to his appointment, Dr Achio has since 1997 served in various capacities of the Polytechnic including the position of Vice Principal.

He has also served as the Head and Coordinator of the Research and Innovation Centre.

He assumes office on July 1, 2012, with a broad level of expertise both intellectually and professionally with over 15 years experience in the educational field.

During his successful tenure of office in the Research and Innovation Centre, Dr Achio organised seminars on research, publications and proposal writing for lecturers.

His immense knowledge in the field of research enabled him to mentor staff in research writing and publications.

Dr Achio holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from the Academy of Sciences, Institute of Microbiology and Virology in Kazakhstan, MSc. Agriculture (Agronomy) from the Agricultural Institute of Kazakhstan, formerly of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (U.S.S.R).

The Rector is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Polytechnic, and is accountable to the Governing Council as the academic and the administrative head.

The Rector is the Chief Disciplinary Officer of the Polytechnic, and exercises a general authority over both staff and students, subject to the Polytechnic Act 2007, ACT 745, and the Statutes of the Polytechnic.

The Rector provides leadership in achieving the strategic objectives, the vision and the mission of the Polytechnic, with the view to promoting academic and professional excellence, in line with the mandate of Polytechnic education in Ghana.

The Rector is also responsible for prudent Financial Management and Human Resource Management of the Polytechnic.

The Accra Polytechnic has a student population of approximately 12,000 and staff strength of about 700.

The object of the institution, as stated in the Polytechnics Act 2007, ACT 745, is to provide tertiary education through full time courses in the field of manufacturing, commerce, science, technology, applied social sciences and applied arts.
