The Fomena Community Health Nurses Training School in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti Region has held its fourth annual matriculation to formally admit 302 students.

They will pursue a two-year certificate programme that will train them as community health nurses.

Speaking at the matriculation ceremony, the Principal of the school, Mrs Lynda Rockson Banful Mante, said for the 2011/2012 academic year, the school received 2,624 applications but could offer admission to only 302 due to inadequate infrastructure and tutorial staff.

She said the vision of the school was to make it a premiere centre of academic excellence in the salubrious training of community health nurses to provide quality health care.

She announced that the school was undergoing the accreditation process to offer Diploma in Community Nursing (Registered Community Nursing) courses.

Mrs Banful Manteexpressed worry that the greater part of the school’s infrastructure which was incomplete had been abandoned adding that while the school's authority appreciated the efforts by the Ministry of Health to address the problems, there was the need for the early completion of the projects to address the school's major challenges.

She said other problems facing the school included inadequate tutors, a situation which places a heavy load of work on the staff at post. This had affected the effective supervision of students, she complained.

Mrs Mante expressed appreciation to the Adansi North District Assembly, parent-teacher association and other stakeholders for their support, and called for more assistance to enable the school realise its vision.

Alhaji Dr Mohammed Bin Ibrahim, a former Ashanti Regional Director of Health Services, said the nursing profession was a ‘call’ and, therefore, urged the students to desist from embarking on industrial action which undermines the image of the profession.

He also called on the students to be compassionate, humane, sacrificial, patriotic and dedicated to boost health care service in the country.

Mrs Gloria Aduse-Opoku, the Ashanti Zonal Officer of the Nurses and Midwives Council of Ghana who administered the oath to the students, called on them to adhere to the ethics of the profession.
