Play a positive role in Ghana's development - National Chief Imam

Accra, May 7, GNA – Sheikh Dr Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, National Chief Imam has called on Muslims to play an active part in both the political and the socio-economic development of the country.

He said Muslim youth in the Zongo communities should expose any politician who would want to use them as a conduit to perpetuate political violence before, during and after the forthcoming elections.

The National Chief Imam was speaking at a 'Maulid' ceremony to celebrate the birth of the Prophet Muhammed (SAW) organized by the Supreme Council of Tijjania Islamic Affairs in Accra.

Dr Sharubutu said the just-ended Biometric Voter Registration exercise across the country was the beginning of the country's 2012 Election process, and said “As a religious leader, I call on all Ghanaians and in particular Ghanaian Muslims who registered in peace to come out and exercise their voting right in December 2012.”

He said Ghanaians must expressed their appreciation to Allah for the peace that prevailed in the country and called on Muslims to continue to support and pray for a peaceful Election in December.

Sheikh Yahaya Amin, Founder of the Islamic Foundation for Peace and Development (IPAD) said it was important to call on all stakeholders in the upcoming elections to ensure fairness and a level playing field for all. "This I believe will enable Ghanaians to choose the best candidate for the betterment of our one and only country.

Sheikh Amin said Ghanaians were a united people and added that "the unity we are experiencing now as a nation should not dissipate as Ghanaians love their country and are committed to her defence".
